Akasha Spa Yoga studio, East Yorkshire

The yoga studio at the new Akasha spa in East Yorkshire had rustic charm even in its dilapidated, pre project days.

The potential from the start was obvious, with the huge barn doors making way for glazed bifolds and the incredible stone wall to the opposite side screaming out for a sandblasting and repointing.

Much of the beauty in this room comes from the original features and how we have utilised and worked within them. I’m specific about how I like these things to be finished so I can be stubborn in my specification for a certain type of wood treatment – osmo raw in this case if you were wondering, and the shade of the mortar used for the repointing work (lime mortar should always be used for jobs like this – the finish will be whiter and you definitely don’t want the grey of a concrete mortar any where near it)

I selected components with metallic finishes to match in with the rooms in the rest of the project, and the clever feature panels hide rough brickwork. I designed the lighting circuits for this building from the start as well. Oh and how lovely did the branding (also a guided project) look as the screening to the windows. When the sunlight creates the brand logos onto the yoga floor it feels even more special.
